Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress general secretary, voiced her concerns on Friday regarding the BJP’s approach to the upcoming assembly polls in Rajasthan. Addressing a large public gathering in Sikrai as part of the Congress’s campaign on the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP), Priyanka drew attention to the BJP’s decision not to announce a chief ministerial candidate and the implications of running the election campaign based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity.
Priyanka subtly raised questions about whether Modi would effectively become the Chief Minister, indirectly taking a swipe at both the PM and the saffron party’s strategy.
She pointed out that the BJP’s failure to name a chief ministerial candidate stemmed from multiple contenders within the party who declared themselves as the future CM. In contrast, Priyanka emphasized the unity within the Congress despite not officially nominating a Chief Minister candidate, with Ashok Gehlot presently holding the position. This unity, according to Priyanka, is a defining characteristic of the Congress.
Interestingly, the Congress, too, has not officially announced its Chief Ministerial candidate in Rajasthan. Ashok Gehlot, while addressing the press at AICC headquarters in New Delhi, suggested that projecting a CM candidate in Congress might not be advantageous since such individuals rarely assume the position of Chief Minister after elections.
Talking about the welfare schemes of the Congress government, Priyanka asked, “When they (BJP) were in power, how many schemes did they launch in Rajasthan? It’s clear that the focus of Modi and the BJP is not on your well-being, but on remaining in power and strengthening themselves.”
