New Delhi:
Any medium- to long-term stabilisation of Venezuela’s oil sector could offer India a valuable opportunity to diversify crude sourcing and optimise the performance of its highly complex refineries, energy experts say.
Why Venezuela matters to India
Venezuela holds some of the world’s largest proven crude reserves, largely in the form of heavy and extra-heavy oil. India’s major refineries — particularly those operated by Reliance Industries, Nayara Energy, and Indian Oil Corporation — are designed to process such heavy grades efficiently, extracting higher value products compared to lighter crude.
Before US sanctions tightened, Venezuelan crude was an important part of India’s import basket.
Benefits for complex refineries
India has invested heavily in complex refining units that can handle difficult, high-sulphur crude. Access to Venezuelan oil could:
-
Improve refinery margins by lowering input costs
-
Enhance flexibility in crude blending
-
Reduce dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers
Heavy crude typically trades at a discount, making it attractive for refiners equipped to process it.
Strategic diversification of crude imports
At present, India imports oil from a limited set of geographies, exposing it to geopolitical risks and supply disruptions. A stable Venezuelan supply could strengthen India’s energy security by spreading risk across regions, particularly at a time when global crude markets remain volatile.
Challenges remain
Despite the potential, several hurdles persist. Venezuela’s oil infrastructure needs major investment, output levels are far below historical peaks, and international sanctions continue to restrict trade and financial transactions. Any meaningful impact on India’s crude strategy would therefore be gradual rather than immediate.
Medium- to long-term outlook
Energy analysts believe that if political stability improves and sanctions ease, Venezuela could slowly regain production capacity. For India, this would align well with long-term planning — ensuring steady access to suitable crude grades as domestic fuel demand continues to rise.
Bottom line
While Venezuela’s oil revival will not transform India’s energy landscape overnight, it could become a strategic asset over time. For a country that runs some of the world’s most advanced refineries, access to stable supplies of heavy crude would be a quiet but significant win.
