London, June 15 – India’s newly appointed Test captain, Shubman Gill, has expressed his vision to build a team culture where every player feels “safe and happy,” even as he admitted he never dreamt of leading the national side.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England starting June 20 in Leeds, Gill emphasized his leadership goals. “I never dreamed of being India’s captain. Despite all the trophies, my aim is to create a culture where everyone feels secure and joyful,” he said.
Gill acknowledged that fostering such an environment will not be easy given the pressures of international cricket. “It’s not simple, especially with the volume of matches and the competition. But if I can do it, that would be my biggest achievement,” he added.
The 25-year-old credited Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket in May, for laying a clear path. “Rohit bhai might seem calm, but he’s aggressive with his strategies. He’s always clear in his communication with players,” said Gill.
Gill also praised former captain Virat Kohli’s proactive leadership, saying, “The way Virat reacted during Tests—changing field settings or plans instantly—was something I learned from.”
Before taking charge, Gill had in-depth discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. “They want me to express myself without pressure. No unrealistic expectations,” he revealed.
He also lauded Gambhir’s clear communication and strong mental approach.
On managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload, Gill said, “We’ll decide match-by-match, depending on his fitness and workload. No pre-decided mindset.”
As India targets their first Test series win in England since 2007, Gill’s leadership will be tested both tactically and emotionally. But the young skipper appears ready to lead with empathy and clarity.
