Ahmedabad : In a tragic incident late Friday night, four firefighters were injured — three of them critically — after an LPG cylinder exploded while they were engaged in firefighting operations in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The explosion occurred in the Sector 4 area, where a fire had broken out in a temporary hut situated next to a public toilet.
According to Rajesh Patel, the in-charge Chief Fire Officer of Gandhinagar, the fire department received an emergency call reporting a blaze in the Sector 4 locality at around 11:30 PM. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene and began working to contain the fire, which had rapidly engulfed the hut-like structure.
While they were attempting to douse the flames, an LPG cylinder inside the hut suddenly exploded, causing a powerful blast that injured four personnel. The explosion was so intense that it not only caused serious injuries but also temporarily hampered the firefighting efforts. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by cries for help from within the smoke-filled area.
Local residents and other emergency responders rushed to assist the injured firefighters. They were quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where three of them were admitted to the intensive care unit due to the severity of their burns and trauma. The fourth firefighter is reported to have sustained minor injuries and is currently in stable condition.
Officials believe the cause of the fire could be linked to illegal storage or mishandling of flammable materials within the hut. Preliminary investigations suggest that the LPG cylinder, possibly used for cooking or heating purposes, had been left unsecured, making it a deadly hazard once the fire spread.
Chief Fire Officer Rajesh Patel expressed concern over the condition of his injured team members and emphasized the risks firefighters take every day. “Our team responded swiftly to the emergency, but unfortunately, the cylinder blast was unexpected and devastating. We are providing full support to our injured personnel and their families,” Patel said.
The local administration has launched an inquiry into the incident. Authorities are also reviewing the presence of similar makeshift structures and unauthorized LPG usage in the area to prevent such accidents in the future.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over fire safety protocols and the risks posed by temporary settlements with inadequate infrastructure. Civic bodies have been urged to tighten regulations and carry out inspections to ensure that public spaces and nearby informal settlements are not storing hazardous materials.
Meanwhile, the condition of the critically injured firefighters remains under close observation. The fire department and medical staff are hopeful for their recovery, and the community has come together to express support for the injured heroes who put their lives on the line to protect others.
