Ahmedabad, April 12: Gujarat Titans’ New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to a groin injury. The franchise officially confirmed the development on Saturday through a media release, expressing disappointment over losing a key squad member, despite him not yet having featured in the playing XI this season.
According to the statement issued by the Titans, Phillips sustained the injury during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6. Though he wasn’t part of the starting eleven, he was fielding as a substitute when the incident occurred. The severity of the injury has since forced him to return home to New Zealand for further assessment and rehabilitation.
“Glenn sustained a groin injury while fielding during our game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After consultation with the medical team, it has been decided that he will return to New Zealand for treatment and recovery. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in action soon,” the Titans’ statement read.
The injury comes as a blow to both Phillips and the Gujarat Titans. Known for his dynamic capabilities with both bat and ball, and his electric presence in the field, Phillips was expected to provide valuable depth and versatility to the squad during the long tournament. Even though he hadn’t played a match this season, his experience and all-round skills were seen as crucial components of the Titans’ bench strength.
Glenn Phillips, 28, has been a consistent performer in T20 leagues across the world. He boasts an impressive strike rate with the bat and has often contributed with crucial overs of off-spin. Over the years, his reputation has grown as a dependable and explosive middle-order batter who can also don the gloves when needed. His absence will certainly impact the team’s tactical options moving forward.
The Gujarat Titans, who won the IPL title in 2022 and were runners-up in 2023, have had a mixed start to their 2025 campaign. With injuries and inconsistency plaguing their squad, they will now have to explore replacements for Phillips to bolster their lineup. The franchise has yet to announce a replacement, but sources suggest that the team management is in discussions with the league to bring in a suitable option soon.
Meanwhile, Phillips will undergo further medical evaluation in New Zealand. Given his importance to New Zealand Cricket in the lead-up to the ICC T20 World Cup later this year, the decision to prioritize his recovery is seen as a precautionary but necessary move.
As the IPL season progresses, Gujarat Titans will be hoping to find form and overcome their injury setbacks. While Glenn Phillips’ presence will surely be missed, the team remains determined to adapt and compete strongly in the remaining fixtures.
