Mumbai, Sep 21 – Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account was allegedly hacked on Sunday, sparking a political storm. According to officials, the hackers posted controversial images of Pakistan and Turkey’s national flags and also live-streamed related visuals.
The cyberattack reportedly took place on a day of high anticipation, as India and Pakistan were scheduled to clash in their second game of the Asia Cup cricket tournament. Authorities suspect that the timing of the hack was deliberate, aimed at provoking outrage and gaining maximum visibility.
As soon as the suspicious activity was detected, Shinde’s office immediately alerted the state’s cyber cell. Efforts were launched to block unauthorized access and regain control of the handle. By evening, most of the objectionable content was removed, though screenshots of the posts had already begun circulating widely on social media platforms.
“This appears to be a deliberate attempt to defame and create unrest. A formal complaint has been filed with the cybercrime department, and an investigation has been initiated to trace the origin of the hack,” an official from the Deputy CM’s office stated.
Cyber experts believe the breach may have been carried out by overseas hackers, given the nature of the posts and the references to foreign countries. However, the possibility of domestic mischief is not being ruled out.
Meanwhile, several political leaders condemned the incident, calling it a serious attack on a high-ranking constitutional authority’s digital presence. Citizens were also urged not to share or forward unverified posts related to the hack.
The cyber cell is now analyzing the digital footprint of the hackers and has assured that strict action will be taken once the culprits are identified.
