India can’t afford to rely on foreign supplies in defence sector, says Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday stressed that India must achieve complete self-reliance in the defence sector, asserting that the country cannot afford to depend on foreign supplies in matters concerning national security.

Speaking at a defence event, Singh said that a strong and indigenous defence industry is essential to safeguard India’s sovereignty. He highlighted that the government is committed to strengthening domestic defence manufacturing through policy reforms, production-linked incentives, and encouragement to private industry participation.

“The days of dependence on imports are over. India must develop and produce its own weapons systems. We cannot afford to rely on others when it comes to protecting our nation,” the minister said.

Rajnath Singh also noted that the country’s air defence shield will be comprehensive, consisting of both defensive and offensive elements to deal effectively with any potential adversary. He underlined the importance of integrating modern technology, research, and innovation to prepare India’s armed forces for future challenges.

The Defence Minister further added that initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in defence are already showing results, with many advanced systems, including missiles, aircraft, and warships, being produced domestically.

With increasing geopolitical uncertainties, Singh reiterated that self-reliance in defence manufacturing is not just an economic necessity but a strategic imperative for India’s long-term security.
