Pimpri-Chinchwad, Aug 2 – In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra Cabinet has officially approved the establishment of a District and Additional Sessions Court, along with a Senior Division Civil Court, in Pimpri-Chinchwad—a move hailed as a major step forward for local access to justice.
The initiative, long championed by Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, addresses a persistent demand from local residents and the legal community. Until now, litigants from Pimpri-Chinchwad—a city with a population of over 30 lakh—were forced to travel more than 16 km to Pune’s Shivajinagar courts for both civil and criminal matters.
Budget & Staffing
The state has sanctioned ₹4.98 crore for the initiative, comprising ₹4.30 crore in recurring expenses and ₹0.68 crore as a one-time allocation. The approval includes 54 new posts:
-
26 for the Sessions Court,
-
24 for the Civil Court, and
-
4 for the Government Pleader’s office.
Infrastructure & Location
The courts will operate out of the existing PCMC-owned building, which currently accommodates lower courts. For judicial housing, 19 vacant government quarters in Ajmera Government Colony, Pimpri have been earmarked.
Local Impact & Significance
The decision is set to benefit residents across major PCMC areas like Wakad, Chinchwad, Bhosari, Dighi, Ravet, and Punawale, offering timely and nearby access to legal services—a critical need given the city’s population boom and worsening traffic congestion.
Calling the move “historic and reassuring,” Ajit Pawar expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and cabinet members for the swift approval.
Community & Legal Response
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Advocates Bar Association, which has long advocated for better judicial infrastructure in the area, welcomed the decision as a “transformative step” for the city’s legal ecosystem.
Next Steps
Authorities will now focus on:
-
Staffing and operational readiness,
-
Monitoring implementation through collaboration with local bar associations and officials,
-
Assessing long-term impact, potentially using this as a model for other fast-growing regions in Maharashtra.
