India took control on day one of the first Test at Headingley, despite losing the toss, thanks to brilliant centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. After being asked to bat first by England, the Indian openers laid a strong foundation with a dominant partnership.
Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his red-hot form, registering yet another Test hundred against England, frustrating the home side with his aggressive yet composed innings. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, leading India in a Test for the first time, made it a memorable outing by scoring a captain’s century, showcasing maturity and class.
England’s bowlers struggled to make breakthroughs as the Indian batters piled on the runs throughout the day, leaving the hosts under pressure going into day two.
Gill (127no off 175 deliveries) played with terrific composure and silkiness as he became the fifth India skipper to hit a hundred in his first Test in charge, a group that includes Virat Kohli, the man he replaced at No 4 in the line-up following the legend’s recent retirement.
Jaiswal (101 off 158) notched his fifth Test ton and third versus Ben Stokes’ side alone – which he clinched after suffering from forearm cramps – having smoked two double centuries when India beat England 4-1 at home in early 2024.
