Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of India’s Test cricket team, marking a significant generational shift in leadership. At 25, Gill becomes the 37th Test captain for India and the fifth-youngest in the nation’s history, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket earlier this month .
Gill will lead the team in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The series, part of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle, will also feature matches at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval .
Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain, while Jasprit Bumrah, previously considered for leadership, was not selected due to workload management concerns. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized the importance of preserving Bumrah’s fitness, with Bumrah reportedly supportive of the decision .
The squad sees the inclusion of new faces like Sai Sudharsan and Abhimanyu Easwaran, and the return of Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur. Veteran seamer Mohammed Shami was left out due to a late injury setback .
Gill’s appointment is seen as the beginning of a new era for Indian Test cricket, with expectations high that he will bring fresh energy and vision to the team’s leadership .
