Pune’s public transportation system is set for a significant upgrade as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have committed a combined ₹250 crore to procure 500 new buses for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). This initiative aims to address the increasing demand for efficient and reliable public transit in the region.
Funding Allocation: PMC will contribute ₹150 crore, while PCMC will provide ₹100 crore. This funding is part of a broader plan to enhance PMPML’s fleet and services.
Previous Investments: Earlier, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) allocated ₹230 crore to PMPML, which has already facilitated the acquisition of several new buses. Fleet Expansion Plans: The current procurement of 500 buses is part of a larger strategy to add a total of 1,000 new buses to the PMPML fleet. This includes an additional 500 electric buses, with support anticipated from the central government.
Tata Motors, headquartered in Pune, is being considered for supplying these buses, offering potential cost advantages due to its local presence.
