Under this proposed bill, the government would have the authority to take action against any individual, organization, or institution based on ‘illegal activities.’ However, opposition leaders argue that the definition of ‘illegal activities’ remains vague and could be misused to suppress dissent and silence critics of the government.

Opposition leaders claim that the bill goes against the fundamental principles of democracy. They have drawn parallels to the infamous Rowlatt Act of 1919, imposed by British rule, which allowed authorities to arrest Indians without trial. According to critics, laws like these have historically stripped citizens of their fundamental rights, and they fear the Maharashtra government’s bill could similarly undermine democratic freedoms.
