New Delhi : A nationwide strike, popularly known as Bharat Bandh, was observed across several parts of India on Wednesday as multiple central trade unions and farmer organizations called for a protest against various government policies related to labour reforms, privatization, and workers’ rights.
The strike reportedly saw participation from millions of workers across sectors, including banking, transport, insurance, coal, and public services. Several employee unions joined the protest, leading to partial disruptions in banking operations and government offices in many states.
Major bank unions such as the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and other financial sector organizations supported the strike, resulting in limited services at several public sector bank branches. While online banking and ATMs remained operational in most areas, customers faced delays in in-branch services due to staff shortages.
Trade unions stated that the bandh was organized to protest against recent labour codes, privatization of public sector undertakings, rising unemployment, and inflation. Protesters held rallies and demonstrations in multiple cities, raising slogans and demanding stronger protections for workers and farmers.
In several states, public transport services were partially affected as unions representing transport workers also extended their support to the strike. However, authorities ensured that essential services such as hospitals, emergency services, and law enforcement continued to function normally.
The central government maintained that reforms introduced in recent years are aimed at boosting economic growth, improving ease of doing business, and generating employment opportunities. Government officials stated that dialogue with workers’ representatives remains open to address concerns.
Security arrangements were strengthened in major cities to prevent any law and order issues during the demonstrations. Overall, the strike remained largely peaceful in most parts of the country, although minor disruptions were reported in a few regions.
The Bharat Bandh once again highlighted the ongoing debate between labour unions and policymakers regarding the direction of India’s economic reforms and labour policies.
