Kerala Achieves Historic Milestone, Declares End to Extreme Poverty

In a landmark announcement made on the state’s Formation Day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared Kerala as the first state in India to completely eradicate extreme poverty. Addressing the Assembly on Saturday, the Chief Minister stated that the achievement was made possible through sustained welfare initiatives, inclusive development programmes, and targeted social interventions.

According to the state government, families previously identified under extreme poverty have now been lifted above the threshold through comprehensive policy support including financial aid, housing schemes, health welfare programmes, and employment initiatives.

Kerala has long been recognised for its progressive social indicators, and this milestone further strengthens its position as a model of human-centric development. Officials noted that the state will continue to monitor vulnerable households to ensure long-term sustainability and prevent poverty re-emergence.

The announcement comes as Kerala marks another year of its formation, reinforcing its commitment to equitable growth and social justice. The achievement is expected to serve as a benchmark for other states working toward eliminating extreme poverty.
