New Delhi, : The internal crisis within the All India Tennis Association (AITA) has escalated after its President Anil Jain requested the Delhi High Court to declare the September 2024 elections null and void. This move has prompted angry Executive Committee (EC) members to call an emergency meeting on June 27.
Jain, who faced a no-confidence motion from various state units last year, filed a prayer with the court on May 26 arguing that the elections were not conducted in compliance with the Sports Code. However, he urged the court not to appoint a Committee of Administrators (CoA), citing possible objections from global tennis bodies like the ITF and ATF.
The election results from September 2024 remain sealed due to a legal challenge by former players Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja, leaving the newly-elected office bearers outside the system.
Jain’s unilateral move sparked strong backlash. EC member Hironmoy Chatterjee, who called the June 27 meeting, said Jain acted without EC approval, violating AITA norms. “He can’t file a petition on behalf of the Federation without a resolution. He’s trying to disqualify everyone else,” Chatterjee said.
In his defense, Jain told PTI, “I am still the President. They never consulted me when they filed against the Secretary General. The EC meeting they have called is illegal.”
According to the AITA Constitution, the Secretary General can call EC meetings with presidential consent, but members argue they can requisition one if ignored. With Secretary General Anil Dhupar over the age limit prescribed by the Sports Code, calls for his resignation have intensified.
The June 27 meeting is expected to address governance concerns, including Dhupar’s tenure and Jain’s court filing.
