ओटावा (२४ जून): २३ जून १९८५ रोजी झालेल्या एअर इंडिया फ्लाइट १८२ (कनिष्क) बॉम्बस्फोटाच्या ४०व्या वर्धापन दिनानिमित्त, कॅनडाचे पंतप्रधान मार्क कार्नी यांनी हा दिवस “हिंसक अतिरेकाविरुद्धच्या आपल्या बांधिलकीची दु:खद आठवण” असल्याचे म्हटले आहे.
या प्रकरणात सोमवारी कॅनडाभर विविध स्मृतिसभा आयोजित करण्यात आल्या, ज्यात ओटावामधील डाऊज लेक येथील एअर इंडिया स्मारकावर देखील श्रद्धांजली कार्यक्रम पार पडले. या वेळी भारतीय वंशाचे नागरिक, स्थानिक समुदाय सदस्य, तसेच भारतीय दूतावासाचे प्रतिनिधी उपस्थित होते.
कनिष्क फ्लाइट १८२ ही एअर इंडियाची मॉन्ट्रियल-लंडन-नवी दिल्ली अशी उड्डाण करणारी विमानसेवा होती. २३ जून १९८५ रोजी, ब्रिटनमधील हीथ्रो विमानतळावर उतरण्याच्या अवघ्या ४५ मिनिटे आधी, कनाडा-आधारित अतिरेक्यांनी ठेवलेल्या बॉम्बमुळे विमान havेतच उडवण्यात आले. या स्फोटात ३२९ जणांचा मृत्यू झाला होता, त्यापैकी २८० कॅनेडियन नागरिक होते, आणि बहुतांश भारतीय वंशाचे होते.
पंतप्रधान कार्नी यांनी स्पष्ट केले की, “ही घटना केवळ कॅनडासाठीच नव्हे, तर जागतिक पातळीवर शोकांतिकेची आठवण आहे. आपल्या नागरिकांच्या सुरक्षेसाठी अतिरेकाविरुद्धची लढाई ही आपण विसरू शकत नाही.”
ही घटना आजही कनडामधील सर्वात भीषण दहशतवादी घटनेपैकी एक मानली जाते.
