Old Tax Regime to Continue, Majority of Refunds Already Issued: CBDT Chief.

The government has no plans to discontinue the old income tax regime, according to the Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The clarification comes amid growing adoption of the new tax system by individual taxpayers.

The CBDT chief said the older tax structure will remain available, allowing taxpayers to choose the option that best suits their financial situation. While the new regime has attracted a large share of taxpayers due to lower tax rates and fewer compliance requirements, the government does not intend to impose a deadline for ending the old system.

Addressing concerns over delays in income tax refunds, the CBDT confirmed that around 95 percent of refunds have already been processed and credited. The remaining cases are under review and are largely linked to verification issues or mismatches in filings.

Officials emphasised that refund timelines are not being used to influence taxpayer behaviour or push individuals toward the new tax regime. The tax department continues to focus on faster processing and improved digital systems to reduce pending cases.

The assurance is expected to bring relief to taxpayers who depend on deductions and exemptions available under the old tax regime, particularly those with housing loans, insurance investments, or long-term savings plans.
