In a significant development, the Indian passport has recorded its highest-ever leap on the Henley Passport Index, moving up eight positions from 85th to 77th place. This marks India as the biggest climber globally in the latest update of the index, which ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.
As per the latest rankings, Indian passport holders can now travel visa-free to 59 countries, reflecting a steady improvement in international mobility for Indian citizens. This is the highest number of visa-free destinations Indian passport holders have had in recent years.
The Henley Passport Index, compiled by London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, bases its rankings on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is widely regarded as an authoritative measure of passport strength.
While India has improved its standing, it still trails behind countries like Japan, Singapore, France, and Germany, which offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to more than 190 destinations.
The latest jump is seen as a reflection of India’s growing diplomatic ties and global influence, especially in the wake of stronger bilateral agreements and international cooperation.
Travel experts say this upward trend could open up more tourism and business opportunities for Indian citizens in the near future.
