Man Suffocates in Lift of Fire-Struck Vishal Mega Mart in Karol Bagh

NEW DELHI (July 5): A tragic incident occurred at Vishal Mega Mart in Karol Bagh where a 25-year-old man lost his life after getting trapped inside a lift during a fire that broke out on the premises. The deceased, identified as Kumar Dhirender Pratap, was reportedly shopping at the time of the incident.

According to officials, the fire broke out on Friday evening, triggering chaos and panic among shoppers and staff. While most people managed to escape, Dhirender was later discovered dead inside the lift, where he is believed to have died due to suffocation.

Authorities were alerted immediately after the fire was reported, and a joint rescue operation was carried out by personnel from the Delhi Fire Service, local police, and the disaster response unit. After a thorough search of the premises, Pratap’s body was recovered from inside the elevator.

Preliminary investigations suggest that he may have entered the lift during the confusion, possibly unaware of the fire situation or in an attempt to escape quickly. However, with the power supply and ventilation disrupted due to the fire, the lift became a death trap.

The fire has since been brought under control, and an inquiry is underway to determine the cause of the fire and whether there were lapses in the safety and emergency protocols of the store.

The tragic death has raised serious concerns about fire safety measures in commercial establishments and has prompted authorities to consider stricter compliance checks.

Dhirender’s family has been informed, and further proceedings are being carried out by the police. The post-mortem will confirm the exact cause of death.

The incident has shocked local residents and shoppers, reigniting calls for improved emergency management in crowded marketplaces.
