RTO Cracks Down on Errant Rickshaw Drivers in Pune

In June and July 2025, the Pune RTO received around 250 complaints concerning auto-rickshaw drivers refusing rides, overcharging passengers, and misbehaving. In response, 175 drivers were issued notices. These actions include possible fines and even suspension of permits or driving licenses under the Motor Vehicles Act .
Complaints were most common near major transit hubs — like Metro stations, PMPML and MSRTC bus stops, and busy market areas — where autos often halt illegally, cause congestion, and flout fare regulations .
The RTO is actively encouraging commuters to submit complaints via WhatsApp, including vehicle registration numbers and photographic evidence, to aid enforcement .
250 complaints in just two months indicates a significant spike in reported misconduct along key transit points — a reflection of growing commuter frustration.
The proactive approach — with 175 notices issued — suggests RTO is taking enforcement seriously.
Encouraging WhatsApp-based reporting demonstrates an effort to make the process more accessible and evidence-driven.
Report violations: Send the vehicle number, location, timestamp, and a photo via WhatsApp to the RTO (use the same helpline number mentioned in article — it’s still active).
Be vigilant at hubs: Particularly around Metro stations, bus stands, and markets, powerful collective reporting can prompt sustained enforcement.Encourage compliance: Demand rides by meter, stay calm if a driver refuses, and report the incident when possible.
Pune’s RTO is cracking down on errant rickshaw drivers — responding to a wave of complaints with concrete enforcement, and making it easier for commuters to report misconduct.
