Dumka, Jharkhand – Growing incidents of intimidation, false FIRs, and harassment of journalists in Dumka have raised serious concerns about press freedom and democratic accountability in the region. In response, members of the local press community held a strategic meeting on Saturday and submitted a formal 7-point demand letter to the District Commissioner, calling for institutional safeguards for journalists.
Attacks on Press Freedom Undermine Democracy
Journalists attending the meeting highlighted that in recent months, several members of the press have been subjected to false and baseless legal cases, allegedly in retaliation for reporting on administrative or political corruption. Such actions violate Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and expression, including press freedom.
Participants unanimously condemned these efforts to stifle truth and demanded protection for those committed to public interest journalism.
Peaceful March, Powerful Message
Following the meeting at the circuit house, dozens of journalists marched peacefully but resolutely from the venue to the District Collectorate. Holding placards and banners, they raised slogans demanding justice and protection of press rights. Upon arrival, they handed over their 7-point memorandum to District Commissioner Abhijit Sinha.
Key Demands Submitted by Journalists:
-
Immediate halt to journalist harassment through fabricated charges.
-
Institutional mechanisms for journalist safety at the district level.
-
Withdrawal of all false and baseless FIRs filed against journalists.
-
No FIR to be registered against any journalist without preliminary inquiry by an officer of DSP rank or higher.
-
Strict legal action against those responsible for filing or facilitating false cases.
-
Immediate commencement of construction of a Press Club building in Dumka.
-
Provision of an alternative press space until a permanent facility is built.
Administrative Response
DC Abhijit Sinha assured the journalist delegation that the administration takes their concerns seriously. He promised a fair review of the demands and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring safety, dignity, and freedom for the press. He also gave assurance of impartial inquiry into false FIRs and pledged necessary follow-up action.
Egalis Stance on the Matter
Egalis strongly believes that an independent and fearless press is the backbone of any democracy. The growing pattern of harassment through misuse of legal instruments is not only a violation of journalists’ fundamental rights, but also a threat to public transparency and accountability. It is imperative that state institutions uphold constitutional protections and establish transparent systems that deter abuse of power against the press.
