our culture, our history, and our religion cannot be understood in foreign languages..Amit saha..Amit saha

On Thursday, June 19, 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while speaking in Pune, stated that those who speak English in India would “soon feel ashamed” and emphasized the importance of promoting Indian languages. He remarked that the creation of a society where Indian languages are given primacy is not far away. Shah added that without Indian languages, “we cease to be truly Indian”, highlighting his long-standing stance on encouraging the use of regional and native languages in education, administration, and daily life to preserve cultural identity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a public event in Pune, strongly advocated for the promotion and usage of Indian languages in all spheres of life. He said:
The day is not far when people who speak in English in India will begin to feel ashamed. We must work towards creating such a society where pride is associated with our Indian languages and heritage.”
He emphasized that language is not just a means of communication but a symbol of cultural identity, and that excessive dependence on English distances Indians from their roots. Shah reiterated his belief that:
Without Indian languages, we cease to be truly Indian.”
He pointed out that many developed countries, like Japan, France, and Germany, have progressed by using their native languages in education, technology, and governance. Shah urged citizens and institutions to follow a similar path in India, suggesting that:
It is not necessary to abandon English entirely, but we must stop viewing it as superior.”
He also mentioned that the National Education Policy (NEP) is a step in the direction of promoting Indian languages, especially in school and higher education.
In closing, he appealed to the youth, educators, and policymakers to make Indian languages — such as Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Kannada, and others — a source of pride rather than treating them as secondary to English.
