Modi Government Turns 11 and Going Strong

NEW DELHI (June 8) As the Modi government marks its 11th year in power and completes one year of its third term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appears more firmly in control than many had anticipated following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

After the BJP failed to secure an outright majority, falling short of the “400 paar” goal it had aggressively pitched, opposition parties sensed an opportunity. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi declared that the Modi government had been “finished psychologically” and predicted its imminent fall. Speculation intensified around the stability of the new NDA coalition, given the BJP’s reliance on allies like Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U)—leaders known for changing sides in the past.

However, one year later, those predictions seem misplaced. Far from being hesitant partners, both Naidu and Kumar have embraced the alliance with full-throated support, often publicly praising Modi’s leadership. Their commitment has added a new layer of strength to the NDA coalition, countering early claims of instability.

Despite losses in key states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, Modi’s government has pushed forward with its agenda, emphasizing continuity, governance reforms, and infrastructure development. The prime minister’s message of “strong and stable leadership” continues to resonate with his base, and his public image remains largely intact.

As the third term progresses, Modi’s political acumen and ability to hold together a complex alliance is being tested—and so far, he is passing that test. With the opposition still trying to consolidate its gains, Modi’s hold on the political narrative remains strong, making his 11-year streak in power look far from over.
