Pakistan Looks to Boost Relations with US During Visit from Congressional Delegation

ISLAMABAD: In a move aimed at reinforcing its diplomatic and strategic partnership with the United States, Pakistan emphasized the need to broaden bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors during a visit from a high-level American Congressional delegation. The visit comes at a time when trade tensions have heightened due to the imposition of new tariffs.

The US delegation, headed by Representative Jack Bergman, also included Representatives Thomas Richard Suozzi and Jonathan L. Jackson, accompanied by other prominent American officials. During their trip, they held a significant meeting with Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, on Saturday.

According to an official statement released after the meeting, the discussions revolved around reinforcing mutual ties, with a special emphasis on development collaboration and exploring opportunities for cooperation in diverse fields. The engagement reflects a continued interest from both nations in maintaining a stable and mutually beneficial relationship, despite some ongoing challenges in the trade arena.

Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted Pakistan’s desire to enhance partnerships in areas such as education, energy, climate resilience, technology, and infrastructure development. He underlined the importance of US support in helping Pakistan achieve sustainable development goals and strengthen institutional capacity, particularly in light of ongoing economic reforms and climate challenges.

Iqbal further elaborated on Pakistan’s Vision 2025, a comprehensive strategy aimed at boosting economic growth, social equity, and governance. He urged the US to consider supporting initiatives that align with this long-term national vision, especially in sectors where American expertise and investment can be particularly transformative.

On the other side, the US delegation expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts to stabilize its economy and pursue development goals despite global economic uncertainties. They reiterated their commitment to maintaining open channels of dialogue and cooperation, noting that a strong Pakistan-US relationship is in the strategic interest of both nations.

Both parties also discussed regional security, counterterrorism efforts, and the importance of promoting peace and stability in South Asia. The exchange was described as candid and constructive, with both sides acknowledging the shared challenges and potential for deeper engagement.

The visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts to recalibrate Pakistan’s foreign relations, especially with key Western partners. Analysts suggest that such diplomatic outreach is crucial at a time when Pakistan is seeking greater foreign investment, enhanced trade access, and stronger international partnerships to support its economic recovery.

This interaction between Pakistani leadership and US lawmakers signals a renewed willingness to find common ground and pursue shared goals. With further diplomatic efforts, it is hoped that the dialogue will translate into tangible outcomes, fostering closer ties between the two countries in the months ahead.
