Sharad Pawar Expresses Concern Over Farmer Suicides in Maharashtra, Urges Centre to Formulate Policy

The rising number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra has sparked fresh political debate in the state. According to recent data released by the Maharashtra government’s Relief and Rehabilitation Department, 2,635 farmers took their own lives in 2024. Reacting to this alarming situation, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has urged the central government to formulate a special policy to support distressed farmers.

Sharad Pawar’s Statement, Speaking to reporters, Pawar said, “The information emerging from Marathwada and Vidarbha is deeply concerning. We are also working on gathering accurate data at our level to better understand the problems faced by farmers.” He emphasized that the central government must implement an effective policy to prevent farmers from resorting to suicide due to financial struggles and natural calamities.

Need for Agricultural Reforms , Pawar also shared his views on the future of the agricultural sector, highlighting the role of artificial intelligence (AI). He mentioned that AI will soon be integrated into sugarcane farming, improving its quality and boosting agricultural productivity. Several sugar factories are already exploring AI-based solutions, and discussions are underway to modernize farming techniques.

“The goal is to make farming more efficient and technologically advanced through AI. Meetings with sugar factory officials are planned, and significant steps will be taken soon in this direction,” Pawar stated.

Speculation Over Jayant Patil’s Political Shift Addressing speculation about NCP-SP state president Jayant Patil joining Ajit Pawar’s faction, Sharad Pawar clarified, “Jayant Patil has already made his position clear in the media.” Patil had recently stated that no decision had been made regarding his political future, fueling rumors of a possible switch.

On Friday, after meeting Sharad Pawar, Jayant Patil told the media that his previous statements had been misinterpreted. He reaffirmed his commitment to the party and dismissed any talks of defection.

Sharad Pawar’s remarks have once again put the spotlight on the deepening agrarian crisis in Maharashtra. He reiterated the need for urgent government intervention to address farmers’ distress and accelerate technological advancements in agriculture. Meanwhile, Patil’s clarification indicates that, for now, no significant changes are expected within the NCP.
