Railways Revises Cancellation Rules: No Refund Within 8 Hours of Departure

The Indian Railways has introduced a revised ticket cancellation policy, stating that passengers will not receive any refund if they cancel their tickets within 8 hours of the train’s scheduled departure.

According to officials, the move is aimed at reducing last-minute cancellations and improving seat utilization across trains. Authorities believe that this step will help ensure that more passengers on waiting lists get confirmed tickets in time.

Under the updated rules, passengers cancelling tickets earlier than 8 hours before departure will continue to receive refunds as per existing guidelines, subject to applicable charges. However, once the 8-hour window begins, no refund will be issued regardless of the reason for cancellation.

Railway officials explained that the change is part of broader efforts to streamline operations and enhance efficiency in ticket management. The policy is also expected to discourage speculative bookings and improve availability for genuine travelers.

Passengers have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and make cancellations well in advance to avoid financial loss. The Indian Railways is also encouraging the use of digital platforms for ticket booking and updates.

The new rule is likely to impact a large number of daily passengers, especially those relying on flexible travel plans.
