Opposition divided over move against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Opposition parties are not fully aligned on the proposal to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, highlighting internal differences within the INDIA bloc during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.

While the Congress has been exploring the option as a protest against what it describes as biased conduct by the Speaker, key allies such as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have not shown the same level of urgency or clarity. Leaders from these parties have indicated that even within the Congress, there is no final decision on whether to formally move the motion.

The demand stems from repeated disruptions in the House and the Opposition’s claim that its leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition, have not been given adequate opportunity to speak. The Congress argues that a no-confidence motion would serve as a political signal against what it sees as the shrinking space for dissent in Parliament.

However, TMC sources have suggested that the step may be premature and strategically ineffective, given the ruling alliance’s numerical strength in the Lok Sabha. The SP has also adopted a wait-and-watch approach, saying it would respond once Congress takes a concrete step.

Under parliamentary rules, removing a Speaker requires majority support of the total membership of the House — a difficult task for the Opposition at present. As a result, the proposed motion appears more symbolic than practical.

The lack of consensus underscores broader coordination challenges within the Opposition alliance, even as parties continue to raise concerns over parliamentary functioning.
