Washington, D.C. | September 19, 2025 – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy by suggesting that television broadcasters who give him “too much bad publicity” could face the risk of losing their licenses from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Speaking at a political rally on Thursday, Trump criticized what he described as “biased coverage” by mainstream media networks. He argued that broadcasters have been “deliberately spreading negativity” against him and hinted that their FCC licenses should be reviewed if such coverage continues.
> “When TV stations constantly attack me and only spread lies, maybe their licenses shouldn’t be renewed. Why should the American people allow fake news to operate freely?” Trump said to a cheering crowd.
The remarks immediately drew strong reactions from media watchdogs and political opponents, who accused Trump of once again attempting to undermine press freedom. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of the press, and legal experts say the FCC has no authority to revoke licenses based on coverage that politicians dislike.
Critics called Trump’s statement a “dangerous attack on democracy,” while his supporters argued that the media should be held accountable for what they consider “unfair reporting.”
This is not the first time Trump has clashed with broadcasters. During his presidency, he repeatedly labeled major media outlets as “fake news” and threatened regulatory actions, though no licenses were ever revoked.
