Maval MP Shrirang Barne met with Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to advocate for the establishment of a High Court bench in Pune. He emphasized that Pune district’s population is nearly 1.5 crore, and over 45% of all pending cases in the Bombay High Court originate from this district. Approximately 45,000 new cases are filed from Pune each month.
MP Supriya Sule addressed a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging the state government to initiate the process for setting up a bench in Pune. She highlighted the city’s robust legal infrastructure, including over 25,000 practicing lawyers, 60+ law colleges, and myriad judicial institutions.
Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai has indicated “no objection in principle” to establishing a circuit bench in Pune—a significant development signaling progress in this long-standing demand. A “Bench Action Committee” has been formed under senior Advocate S.K. Jain, with plans for public awareness campaigns, resolution submissions in the monsoon session, and more.
The Pune Bar Association (PBA) has issued a firm ultimatum to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and the Governor: decide within 10 days, or face a complete boycott of court work starting August 1. This ultimatum reflects the urgency and frustration over over four decades of delay, since a resolution was first passed back in 1978.
The new Bombay High Court circuit bench in Kolhapur will become operational from August 18, covering six districts including Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
Pune’s legal community responded strongly, with PBA President Adv. Hemant Zanzad stating: “We have been demanding an HC circuit bench in Pune much before Kolhapur made their demand. Pune deserves a bench considering the huge pendency of cases.” Lawyers argue that a Pune bench would be more than justified given the volume of cases and the city’s role in Western Maharashtra.
