Kangana Ranaut reacts to government’s decision to ban OTT apps: ‘Much appreciated’

Actress Kangana Ranaut has welcomed the government’s move to ban certain OTT apps for allegedly hosting obscene and illegal content. Taking to social media, she expressed her support for the decision, calling it a “much-needed step” and saying it was “much appreciated.”

Kangana, known for her outspoken views, wrote, “This was long overdue. Thanks to the government for taking action against the vulgarity and filth being passed off as creativity in the name of OTT content. Much appreciated.”

The Centre recently banned several lesser-known OTT platforms following complaints about the spread of pornographic and obscene material. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that these apps were violating the IT Rules, 2021, and were not following due content regulation mechanisms.

Kangana, who herself has worked in digital content through her production ventures, has often raised concerns about the “unfiltered and offensive” nature of some web content. Her statement echoes the sentiment of many who have called for stricter oversight of OTT platforms.
Kangana told , “In order to preserve the overall culture of our country and the future path of our youngsters, and so that our society does not collapse completely, this step was much awaited and is now much appreciated. The action taken against these apps, especially the illegal ones, is highly appreciated.”
The government has asked the Internet Service Providers to disable or remove public access to these websites within the country..
According to the media report, “MIB has also intimated to the Director (DS-II), Department of Telecommunications, with a request to facilitate compliance by the ISPs.”

Meanwhile, several others, including actor Ravi Kishan, also welcomed the government’s decision, saying, “boundaries and limits need to be set.” He told ANI, “The government’s decision was important in regards to India’s culture. Licensed and unlicensed OTT platforms have been making soft porn and obscene films. This is indeed a great decision. There is a ‘Laxman Rekha’ for entertainment.”

The move by the government is being seen as a signal that digital content creators will now face more scrutiny under existing legal frameworks.
