Indian Railways has once again revised its reservation services. Under the new system, a maximum limit has been set for issuing waiting list tickets. This means that only a certain number of waiting list tickets will be issued for each train class, and once that limit is reached, no more waiting tickets will be available. This step aims to reduce overcrowding and bring more transparency and predictability to train travel.
In a significant move to streamline the reservation process and improve passenger convenience, Indian Railways has revised its reservation rules once again. Under the new system, the Railways has introduced a maximum cap on the number of waiting list tickets that can be issued for each class and train.
Fixed Waiting List Quota: For each category (Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, etc.), only a limited number of waiting tickets will be issued. Once this quota is exhausted, no further bookings will be allowed, even on the waiting list.
No Unrestricted Waitlist Booking: Earlier, passengers could book tickets even when the chances of confirmation were extremely low. Now, once the cap is reached, the system will not allow further bookings, preventing false hopes and overbooked compartments.
More Predictability for Passengers: This change aims to help travelers plan better. If waitlisted tickets are not available, they can explore alternative trains, routes, or dates, instead of waiting in uncertainty.
Reduction in Last-Minute Rush: By capping the waitlist, Indian Railways aims to reduce overcrowding at stations, unauthorized travel, and last-minute cancellations.
Applies to All Reservation Channels: The rule is applicable to bookings made both online through IRCTC and at physical ticket counters across the country.
The decision comes in response to long-standing concerns from passengers about overbooking, last-minute refusals, and lack of clarity on ticket confirmation. The move is also part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernize the booking system and improve the overall travel experience.
