Jaipur Police Arrests Former Rajasthan University Student Leader; Congress Criticizes Move

Jaipur, June 21: Tensions flared on Saturday at Rajasthan University as police arrested Nirmal Chaudhary, former president of the university’s student union, in connection with a 2022 case related to unlawful assembly. The arrest took place while Chaudhary was reportedly appearing for an examination on campus.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Tejaswani Gautam confirmed the arrest, stating, “After reviewing the investigating officer’s report, Nirmal Chaudhary has been detained and is being formally arrested in connection with the ongoing case.”

Chaudhary’s arrest sparked a political stir, with the Congress party strongly condemning the action. Sangaria MLA and Youth Congress state president Abhimanyu Poonia, who was present with Chaudhary during the incident, criticized the police and termed the arrest politically motivated.

The original case dates back to 2022, when Chaudhary was allegedly involved in leading a student protest that turned into an unlawful assembly on the university campus. The incident had led to a police investigation, but no arrest had been made until now.

Congress leaders accused the state’s BJP-led government of misusing law enforcement to target young political voices and suppress student activism. “This is an attack on democracy and student leadership. The government is clearly trying to silence dissent,” Poonia said in a statement.

The arrest has triggered reactions on social media and among student groups, many of whom have called for Chaudhary’s immediate release and are planning protests across college campuses in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Jaipur Police maintains that the arrest was carried out strictly in accordance with legal procedures and based on investigation findings.

Further developments are awaited as political and student organizations escalate their response.
