‘Never Discussed Religion in Class’: Dreams Put on Hold as MBBS Course Stopped at J&K’s Vaishno Devi Medical College.

For dozens of medical students at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Government Medical College in Jammu and Kashmir, the dream of becoming doctors has been abruptly interrupted. The National Medical Council’s (NMC) decision to withdraw approval for the MBBS programme has left students anxious, confused, and uncertain about their future.

Many students insist that religion never entered their classrooms. “We never discussed religion in class. We came here to study medicine,” said a student whose academic journey has now been stalled. Several others echoed similar sentiments, stressing that they were focused solely on their coursework, clinical training, and exams.

Approval Withdrawn After Complaints

The MBBS programme was put under scrutiny following multiple complaints and a surprise inspection by the NMC. The regulator cited alleged irregularities related to admissions and compliance with norms. Subsequently, approval for the course was withdrawn, effectively freezing admissions and casting doubt over the status of existing batches.

While the authorities have stated that the action was taken to maintain regulatory standards, students argue that they are being punished for issues beyond their control.

Students Caught in the Crossfire

Those already enrolled fear delays in completing their degrees, uncertainty about transfers to other colleges, and potential loss of academic years. “We worked hard to clear NEET, got admission legally, and now our careers are hanging in the balance,” another student said.

Parents have also expressed concern, questioning why students should suffer due to administrative lapses. Many are demanding either immediate restoration of approval or relocation of students to other recognised medical colleges without academic loss.

College and Government Response

College authorities have maintained that they are cooperating fully with the NMC and are hopeful of resolving the issues. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has also assured students that their interests will be protected and that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.

However, no clear timeline has been given, adding to the growing frustration among students.

Uncertain Road Ahead

As the controversy continues, students remain in limbo—attending classes without clarity on whether their degrees will ultimately be recognised. For now, aspirations built over years of preparation remain paused, waiting for a resolution that could determine the course of their professional lives.
