CM Fadnavis Directs Formation of SIT to Investigate Woman Doctor’s Death in Phaltan

In a move signalling urgent action, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the death of a woman doctor found dead in the Phaltan region of Satara district.
The doctor — originally from Beed district in central Maharashtra — was discovered hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan on October 23. A suicide note reportedly written on her palm made serious allegations, naming Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane as having raped her repeatedly, and software engineer Prashant Bankar for alleged mental harassment. Both have since been arrested.
Fadnavis, who also holds the state Home portfolio, instructed the Director General of Police to appoint an SIT headed by a woman IPS officer to ensure a transparent

probe. He declared that no “political angle” will be allowed to influence the investigation.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has condemned the incident and launched protests, citing repeated complaints by the doctor about harassment that were allegedly ignored.
Political tensions have also escalated, with the opposition accusing the government of failing to ensure women’s safety and of mishandling the case.
The case has triggered broader concern about workplace safety and protection for women in public service, particularly in rural and semi-urban settings.
If the probe leads to broader institutional reforms — such as stricter enforcement of anti-harassment protocols in government hospitals.
Whether the SIT uncovers conclusive evidence to confirm or refute the allegations in the suicide note.
The government’s commitment to swift justice may influence public trust in law-and-order governance in the state.
