The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is set to implement Aadhaar-based biometric authentication and AI-powered surveillance across its examination centers starting June 2025. This initiative aims to enhance exam security and curb malpractices such as impersonation and document forgery. However, the upcoming Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2025, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, with approximately 9.5 lakh candidates across 80 centers, will proceed under the existing protocols and will not be affected by these new measures .
The decision to introduce these technologies follows high-profile cases like that of former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar. She was accused of using forged documents, including fake OBC and disability certificates, to gain extra attempts in the Civil Services Examination 2022. Although the Supreme Court granted her anticipatory bail, investigations into her alleged misconduct are ongoing .
Under the new system, candidates will undergo Aadhaar-based fingerprint and facial recognition verification from the point of online registration through to the day of the examination. On exam day, e-admit cards featuring QR codes will be scanned using handheld devices to validate each candidate’s identity in real time. Additionally, AI-enabled CCTV monitoring will be deployed to detect and prevent suspicious activities during exams
These measures are part of a broader effort by the UPSC to restore public trust and ensure the integrity of its examination processes. The Commission plans a phased and systematic implementation of these technologies across all future examinations .
