- Bajrang Punia will be one of the top medal contenders at CWG 2022
- Bajrang won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics
- The Sports Ministry also approved shooter Anish Bhanwala’s foreign training in Germany
Bajrang Punia got the green light from the Sports Ministry to train in the United States of America in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games and wrestling world championships later this year. The Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist will have a 35-day training camp in Michigan in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games for which he booked a berth after winning his trails.
Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) approved the training plan for Bajrang on Wednesday, June 22. He will train in the USA from June 25 until July 30.
Bajrang’s funds for travel, boarding, and daily costs for training camp in Michigan will come from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, the PTI news agency said. The costs will also cover the expenses of Bajrang’s personal coach and physiotherapist.
Bajrang was one of the favourites to win a Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year but the wrestler had fought repechage to finish with a bronze. The star wrestler had won a bronze at the Bolat Turlykhanov Cup 2022 wrestling tournament in Almaty earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the MOC also approved financial assistance towards the procurement of two T20 Proteam Look TT track bikes for TOPS development cyclists Ronaldo Singh and David Beckham.
