Netanyahu’s deeply divisive plan for a new military push in Gaza

Complete Conquest Proposal: On August 7, Netanyahu brought a plan before his security cabinet calling for the “complete conquest” of Gaza through a four- to five-month military campaign centered around Gaza City. The goal: eliminate Hamas and eventually transfer control to unspecified Arab forces. Critics warn this could spiral into a prolonged conflict with heavy casualties and worsen the humanitarian crisis.
Security Cabinet Approval: As of August 8, the security cabinet approved this plan focusing initially on a full occupation of Gaza City. Netanyahu insists Israel does not intend to govern Gaza indefinitely but seeks to establish a “security perimeter” before passing control to Arab forces. The move could force the displacement of nearly one million Palestinians and has drawn sharp criticism from military leaders, humanitarian groups, hostages’ families, and international observers.
Diplomatic Fallout: These aggressive measures have alienated key global allies. Traditional partners—like France, the UK, Canada, and even factions aligned with former U.S. President Trump—are voicing disapproval, some even supporting recognition of a Palestinian state. The restrictive aid policies and military escalation are seen as strategic missteps that undermine Israel’s global standing.
Military Officials Oppose full occupation, warning of high casualties, risks to hostages, and long-term entanglement.
Allies / International Increasingly critical; humanitarian concerns intensify and diplomatic support is eroding.
Netanyahu (Political) Framed as a strategy to dismantle Hamas and secure hostages; justified as temporary control.
Humanitarian Advocates Alarmed by forced displacement, civilian suffering, and potential violations of international law.
In short, Netanyahu’s full-scale Gaza plan has dramatically polarized Israeli leadership and strained relations with allies, while opening the door to one of the most consequential chapters in the conflict thus far.
